Old World Charm, Modernized

This project is the result of a true collaboration with the homeowner. Her vision for the space, her fine-tuned design eye and her deep knowledge of how she planned to use the garden inform each detail.

What started as a very modern redesign of an outdated landscape evolved into the creation of a Mediterranean oasis with a nod to modern lines. The final combination speaks to the history and spirit of Northern California.

Each turn or passageway opens onto another, while the landscape hits all the senses. Light filters through olives and an established redwood, punctuating soft stucco with sharp shadow lines; there is a soft crunch of gravel underfoot and light slap of water in the fountain, while all is enveloped with the scent of citrus and salvia.

The seamless connection to home, sky and land was a collaborative effort. Each terrace of this LEED Platinum home has a unique view and degree of privacy as it soars or is nestled against an edge. The lower intimate spaces feature a fire pit and hot tub and bring focus to the garden level.

Edges and surfaces are maximized. A continuum of materials from the architecture into the landscape softens the verticality of the building as creates a visual base. Wood faced landscape walls transition the mass of the building to human scale at the ground plane. The shipping container works double duty as architectural surfaces and garden as a green roof.

Edible fruits and vegetables with low maintenance plants round out this composition of intimate spaces that stack together as one.
